Scripture Reading: Isaiah 58

 

According to Isaiah 58, true fasting isn't just about abstaining from food, but is about faith, demonstrated through active  compassion and biblical social justice: breaking the chains of oppression, sharing food with the hungry, providing shelter for the poor, clothing the naked, and ending injustice, exploitation, and gossip. 

 

God desires a fast that frees the oppressed and brings relief to the needy, not  outward displays of suffering. The God directed fast promises to bring healing, guidance, and His presence!

We are called to free those who are oppressed and remove yokes of bondage. This includes forgiving people we hold captive in our hearts!

​

 

We are called to share with the hungry & provide food for those who are in need. No one should ever go hungry in our presence, especially if we have the means to provide. In fact we should the first ones willing to give up our plate as a sacrifice in order to show love for those who are in need. 

​

 

We are to shelter the poor & even take people into our homes. Hospitality should be our middle name!

​

 

We are to clothe the naked & give clothes to those in need. We surely don't need everything in our closets.

​

 

We are to help our own kin & not turn away from family. Charity starts at home!

 

We are to end oppression and evil talk & forsake all malicious speech and contempt. If we have nothing nice to say, take it the prayer!

​

 

If repentance is manifested in true Godly sorrow, the Lord promises that our light will break forth, Darkness will turn to brightness,

​

Healing will come & Wounds will be quickly healed. That His glory will be our rear guard, and He will answer our prayers. That we will be like a well-watered garden, and the Lord will continually lead us!

​

 

Ultimately, God wants fasting to be transformational, not a mere ritual. It's about aligning our actions with His heart for justice and mercy, showing that our heart is truly changed and focused on Him and His people, not denying our own body in self-righteousness & hopes of personal gain.
